Pages Loading explores the transient & frequent instances of textual transmutation in digital reading environments. As code & meta-data become vernacular, fugitive obfuscation manifests as blurry, pixelated, and nebulous digital pages. Pages Loading captures these interstitial moments, observing the commonplace linguistic disruption of the e-reader interface.

my brother-in-law and the Kidney March…

My brother-in-law Jon was diagnosed with Kidney disease in 2001 and began peritoneal dialysis in early 2013. The road is long and his health – like so many people with Kidney Disease – is precarious.

On the weekend of September 5, 2014 , my wife Kristen (Ingram) Beaulieu is participating in The Kidney March with her aunt and cousin. Kristen will be walking 100 kilometres over three days from Kananaskis Country to Calgary with hundreds of other courageous people to raise money to fight kidney disease. The net proceeds from the event will support non-profit kidney health programs in every region of the country and cutting-edge medical research on kidney diseases at leading academic institutions. The Kidney Foundation, a registered charity, will award grants to these types of organizations.

As part of this fundrasier, Kristen as created www.jonnysangels.wordpress.com. Please check it out to learn more about the March. There is also a donation page on the site in hopes you may make a fully tax-deductible pledge to help us meet Kristen’s fundraising goal of $2800.

Kidney disease can strike anyone at any age. 1 in 10 Canadians have kidney disease, with millions more at risk. It’s a silent killer; most people don’t know they have it until their kidneys are near failure. Once that happens, it’s a fight for survival.

On Dec 9, 2013 Jacqueline Valencia started handwriting – with spontaneous illustrations – the entirety of James Joyce’s Ulysses. The results are posted daily on gettinginsidejamesjoyceshead.blogspot.ca. Gathering the first 4 pages of Valencia’s obsessive practice, this edition of Ulysses claims the manuscript as Valencia’s.

Toronto-based poet, writer, and film critic Jacqueline Valencia earned her Honours BA in English at the University of Toronto (Literature major, Cinema Studies minor). Jacqueline is currently a freelancer, Assistant Editor at Beyond Borderlands, founding editor of These Girls On Film, and a film journalist and senior staff film critic at Next Projection.

This poem isolates letters from page 98 of NASA’s voice transcription of the Apollo 11 moon mission, uncovering (in sequential order) the musical notes of two chorus lines from Harry Dacre’s “Daisy Bell” (“A Bicycle Built for Two”). These chorus lines famously appear as the death knell of the computer HAL in Arthur C. Clarke and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Ken Hunt is the author of Space Administration (89+/LUMA Foundation, 2014). For three years, Ken served as editor of NōD Magazine, the University of Calgary English department’s publication of undergraduate prose, poetry, and visual art. In 2010, Ken co-founded The Scribe and Muse, a University of Calgary club that promotes writing and literacy, offering a free peer-editing service to students across all faculties. Ken lives in Calgary.
