From the translators’ afterword:
“Premièrement, firstly, that which comes first, preceding everything else. For Éluard, love. Love coupled with the word, the image, poetry which reaches for words to embody the experience of loving, to draw it down from the cosmos into the body. “My love having shaped my desires/Set your lips like a comet in the sky of your words.” Mon amour, my love, both my beloved and my loving, the other and that which the other calls forth from the speaker: L’Amour, la poésie, the title of the collection in which this poetic sequence first appeared.”

Paul Éluard (1895-1952), born Eugene Émile Paul Grindel, was a French poet instrumental in the Surrealist movement, which he later abandoned for the French Communist Party. The more than seventy books he published included poetry, literary and political works.

Ross Belot and Sara Burant have been translating Paul Éluard’s 1932 French Surrealist collection La Vie immédiate. Their translations have appeared in journals including Denver Quarterly, Delos, Ezra, and World Poetry Review. TOgether they are the editorial team at The Transformation Review.
